One bassist’s retirement plan

How will you spend retirement? Oh yes, you’re enjoying huge success as the bassist for your band right now, but what will you do after you’ve corralled boatloads of money and the limelight fades? It’s a tough question, but one to which Ryc Rienks has found a solution: instrument repair.

Rienks toured as bassist with The Drifters in the 1970s,before taking up his trade in 1981. He now works part-time at a music shop in Baker City, Oregon, repairing any type of hand-held instrument. He prides himself on his personalized customer service. His favorite tool? “A piece of drumstick. It is perfect for pounding out dents and rounding things out.” Rienks employs a variety of tools he has invented over the years to get the job done.
