Deep Purple: Phoenix RisingDeep Purple’s history is examined in Phoenix Rising, a DVD/CD package that includes the film “Gettin’ Tighter,” which tells the band’s story revolving around its Mark IV lineup and eventual demise through in-depth interviews, never told stories and backstage footage.

In addition to the 90-minute documentary, 30 minutes of never-before-seen concert footage from their 1975 performance at Tokyo’s Budokan Arena, entitled “Rises Over Japan.” The package is also supplemented with an 8-song CD of the music from that performance.

The documentary includes interviews with bassist Glenn Hughes, who replaced Roger Glover in 1973. After further changes, the Mark IV line up of the band consisted of Hughes, David Coverdale on vocals, Tommy Bolin on guitar, Ian Paice on drums and Jon Lord on keys.

The time proved to be trying for Hughes, who said, “I didn’t like the man I was becoming… but I couldn’t stop it.”
