Dream Theater Releases “A Dramatic Turn of Events”

Dream Theater: A Dramatic Turn of EventsDream Theater’s newest album is aptly named. A Dramatic Turn of Events is the band’s eleventh studio album, and first to feature new drummer Mike Mangini, replacing Mike Portnoy, who left the band a year ago.

Work on the album began in January of this year, and wrapped in June at Cove City Sound Studios in Long Island, New York. John Petrucci produced the album and cowrote all the music, with bassist John Myung contributing his composition skills to six of the nine tracks. The group produced demo tracks with programmed drums and sent the demos to Mangini to learn his parts.

Keyboardist Jordan Rudess said the group’s approach was more open to keyboards than in the past, and that following Portnoy’s departure, he and Petrucci “became, like, free,” and that the new album is “heavy, proggy and melodic.”

The album is just over 77 minutes long, and is available as a single CD, on vinyl and as a Special Edition CD/DVD set.
