Frank Russell Releases “Circle Without End”

Frank Russell: Circle Without EndBassist Frank Russell’s second solo album, Circle Without End, is now available for download. For his follow-up to 2005’s Covering All Basses, the Chicago native recruited a cast of high caliber musicians including bassists Daryl Jones (Rolling Stones) and Richard Patterson (Miles Davis, David Sanborn), renowned trumpeter Wallace Roney, pianist Robert Irving III and others.

The idea for the album came about after a conversation with a friend, and pays homage to his family.

“It is dedicated to a lot of my family in the spirit of how I grew up,” Russell explains. “I wrote the music first and then collaborated with my son’s father-in-law, Manuel Simo, who is a published author, to write the lyrics. I asked him to write about our family and he wrote the words “Circle Without End” and I thought it would be a great title for the CD.”

The overall feel of the record is very groove heavy, with influences from contemporary, R&B, World and Latin styles. The tracks often have multiple bass lines happening, especially the track “Quick Pix,” which Russell wrote specifically for himself, Jones and Patterson in the “SMV mold.”
