Bill Wyman on Stones World Tour: “I don’t fly… no way I’ll go on any tour”

Bill Wyman

Well, it was nice while it lasted.

Hot on the heels of the news that Bill Wyman was rehearsing with the Rolling Stones as part of the band’s 50th anniversary comes the news that Wyman won’t be touring with the group as hoped.

Following the rehearsals, guitarist Keith Richards said, “We’re playing around with the idea [of a tour] and had a couple of rehearsals… we’ve got together and it feels so good.”

Now EADT Suffolk Magazine is reporting the bassist is staying put.

“I don’t fly, so there’s no way I’ll go on any tour,” Wyman shared, adding “I did meet up with them earlier this year for a couple of rehearsal sessions but that was all.”

Even Richards has reportedly changed his tune – along with Mick Jagger – who say they aren’t thinking about touring until 2013.

“Basically, we’re just not ready,” Richards told EADT. “I have a feeling that [a tour in 2013 is] more realistic.”

Reports have circulated that Richards’ health is one of the key factors in the delay.

But then again, Richards is still holding out hope – or at least generating hope for fans on whether or not Wyman may change his mind for a 2013 tour.

“I think he’s up for it. We talked about it,” Richards reportedly said.

“Stay tuned,” as they say.

  1. Why would you want Bill Wyman when you can have Darryl Jones?

    • My inside sources tell me that since ‘Gomper’ is not in the set list, all bets are off…yeah, stay tuned.

    • Hmm. That would be the one reason to bring Bill back.

    • Not trying to start a fight here Scott, but considering Bill started out with the band,it makes sense for him to do the 50th anniversary tour if he’s willing.I absolutely love “Munch” as a player but he’s not the original guy…plain and simple.

    • well Jackie, you’re of course right. But Darryl is such a great player. However, my number one reason to bring back Bill is “In Another Land” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8KzA6es3Bo

    • OK. I’m already practicing that one for the Midair Collision reunion.

    • Its my favorite Bill Wyman tune…oh…wait…its the *only* Bill Wyman tune!

    • But, in all seriousness – it *is* a great tune, in my humble opinion.

    • Thank you! Somebody with some sense!!

      • Michael

I like my rock n ‘roll to have some guts to it. Hence my belief Bill Wyman is THE Stones bass player. For great Bill Wyman bass lines, check out: Around and Around, Paint It Black, Goin’ Home, Start Me Up, Hot Stuff, Satisfaction, Dandelion, All of Some Girls, Terrifying etc. Bill laid down the bottom end, AND enhanced the song. A bass player with some actual emotion for rock n’ roll. I don’t get that with Darryl Jones. Darryl just shows up, puches the clock, plunks down some notes without his own unique twist, collects his paycheck, and goes home again. For me, the Stones aren’t the real Stones without Bill Wyman.

    • You are right. I agree. But, he’s better than the original guy, in my opinion!

    • Sorry Scott. Bill is pretty underrated as a bass player. Just listen ton the “Goat Head Soup” and “It’s Only Rock -n- Roll” lps He plays some cool stuff on “Sticky Fingers” too and others etc. I guess it’s just apples and oranges. :)

  2. Because hes Bill Wyman nuff said.

  3. “I don´t fly”….well…GET IN THE VAN!

  4. Couldn’t they put him on a plane and give him some sleeping pills? And then he could take a train to different cities?

Everybody is always so surprised that the Stones are still going strong going into their 70s. I’m not. They’re all blues musicians at heart and many blues musicians play music into their late 90’s. Look at Pinetop Perkins. He was born in 1913, started playing music in 1926 and didn’t stop until his death which was, what, two years ago? I wouldn’t be surprised if this band did a world tour when Mick and Keith were 93.

  5. Come on Billy be a good sport old boy!

  6. Hey, Bill… if you don’t like to fly maybe you could travel from continent to continent by sea? You know, ride the Pacific Princess?
