Bass of the Week: De Gier BeBop

There are lots of interpretations of the old J-bass, but one that strikes me most is the BeBop made by Dutch boutique shop De Gier. It offers a little more in the curves department with subtle tweaks to set itself apart from the classic design.

De Gier BeBop Bass

Available in 4- or 5-string versions, the De Gier BeBop comes standard with an alder body, hard maple neck, and rosewood fingerboard, though several options are available. The basses are handmade in small batches, so customization is up to the buyer. The pickups are a choice of Fralins or Nordstrands with controls configured Volume, Volume, Tone.

Special to this bass is the De Gier/Vanderkely Fatboost, an “active but subtle bass boost” that is designed to keep the tone as close to its original passive sound as possible. It’s activated by a switch and gives you up to 6dB of boost in the low frequencies, while in the off position the circuit is true bypass for completely passive sound.

Hardware on the BeBop includes a custom De Gier/ETS bridge and Hipshot Ultralight tuners. It’s available in all traditional solid colors as well as sunburst and metallic finishes.

  1. I like this bass, not much fo a fan of the headstock, but I could live with it. And it comes in 5 strings as well, which is a plus.

  2. Anyone some more comments on it then just a copy of their website. I’m dutch and like the idea of a dutch bass in my rack, but there’s so little info on the basses.

  3. From watching the video, I think Richard Bona could make a 100 dollar Squier sound pretty damn good too.

  4. Nice looking bass. I’m digging the blue one with the blocked & bound board.
