Dave Matthews Band Releases “Away from the World”

Dave Matthews Band: Away from the WorldDave Matthews Band has released Away from the World, the band’s eighth studio effort and first since the 2009 release, GrooGrux King.

Matthews, who formed the band in 1991, recently told NPR that he’s surprised he’s made it this far.

“I can remember saying ‘I can’t imagine that I’m going to be doing this when I’m 45’ — and I’m 45. And so I don’t know if there’s a place that we need to go to. But it’s also a sort of interesting challenge to try and work with the same group of people because there’s a uniqueness to it — of trying to get past all the things that relationships have when we’re working together… There’s four of us that have been in the band for more than 20 years. It’s interesting that our love for each other really revolves around the music we make together. We’re not in the same age group, we didn’t come up in the same places, but we really do have a unique sort of love affair when we’re playing music together. And it gets stranger and stranger, but it’s good.”

Away from the World once again pairs the band with Steve Lillywhite. Lillywhite’s most recent studio release with the band was 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets. He last worked with the band in 2001, on the failed “Lillywhite Sessions”, which were leaked online and Lillywhite had departed from the band’s work. The album Busted Stuff, released by RCA in 2002, contained nine re-worked tracks from those sessions.

DMB bassist Stefan Lessard was happy to once again work with Lillywhite. In an interview with Fuse.tv, he shared, “It was great to work with Lillywhite again. There were 10 years or so between our last record with him and now. We didn’t feel like we were finished with him, and I think he felt the same way with us. It was exciting to go back. In the history of this band, this was the first time we came back to a producer. It was a nice reunion. When we recorded with Lilywhite the first few records, it was really a fun time. It was when the band was really bubbling, a lot of inspiration and creativity. So to get back together felt really good. We didn’t have to grease the wheels too much. It just came together. It was a really good time. It’s hard to find any negativity working with Steve. I love his production quality.”

The band premiered the video for “Mercy” a couple of weeks ago:

Away from the World is out now in multiple formats, including CD (standard edition and deluxe edition), a super deluxe CD/DVD set, vinyl and digital formats (iTunes – standard edition and deluxe edition – and Amazon MP3).
