Six String Fretless: Beyond Creation’s “Omnipresent Perception”

You don’t hear a lot of fretless in death metal (save for Steve DiGiorgio and Jeroen Paul Thesseling).

So it’s cool to hear the instrument add a new element to a genre. A good example is the band Beyond Creation, featuring bassist Dominic “Forest” Lapointe on six-string fretless.

Check out this music video for the song “Omnipresent Perception”, in which Lapointe absolutely rips it up.

  1. his accuracy and articulation is just insane!

  2. Man that fretless cuts through so nicely. Impressive work.

  3. Like so many bands of the genre, I’d listen to this all the time if it weren’t for the cookie monster vocals.

  4. rarely dig the metal but this kicks ass.

  5. Its quite epic indeed :D

  6. amazing playing but the vox…seriously? That is just stupid!

  7. Great band. Terrible, awful, painful, rubbish, will-never-buy-a-cd-because-of-it vocals.

  8. Fantastic! As rare as fretless bass is in metal, it’s rarer still to see someone tapping on one.

Also, if you refuse to enjoy music like this on principle of the vocals, you’re only cutting yourself off from some really excellent stuff.

  9. sorry the vocals are a dealbreaker despite the impressive bass playing.

  10. Great musicians but a waste of talent……so sad!

  11. So many people are whining about the vocals that it’s almost astonishing. When people barely alter their speaking voice and call it singing that’s fine, but God forbid there be anything abrasive about them.

  12. Curious about the music and satisfie. Well, I d’ont really care about vocals or lyrics.

  13. Nice! For those who don’t like the vocals… it’s a genre specific thing and genre appropriate (Old metal head hear, though… Slayer, Sepultura & Napalm Death were my JAM back in the day, believe it or not). These guys are killing it! assuming those drums weren’t quantized too much… dayum! Great tech-metal bassist!

  14. Growly voices are a matter of taste, you either like them or not. Personally I dislike them 100%, to the point they spoil everything else, but that’s just me. Nice bass playing nonetheless, makes me want to get a fretless sixer.

  15. I dig this. This dude sounds great.

On a side note, not liking the cookie monster vocals in metal is the same as bitching about saxophones (or any other component of a genre’s sound) in jazz (for example: “I’d totally be into jazz if it weren’t for those saxophones!”) Just like Damian said, it’s part of the sound in some cases….

  16. there’s also a video of just him playing if your more into that (which I’m sure you are) on YouTube, and the song is in the background so you can hear the bass REALLY well.

  17. he should have gone all out and tremolo picked on the fretless bass… (in any case you where wondering… it sounds like shit if ANYTHING goes wrong :P).

  18. The funny thing is, of people calling the vocals crap – I’d like to hear you pull it off, and pull it off for an hour a night on tour. There is a lot of work and technique that goes into that, don’t like it – fine, but don’t ridicule it.

  19. One thing… I love them for not giving a f… about people whining about cookie monster vocals. There is not even one sang part in a whole album. Those who ridicule them should try to do it for even 20 seconds… You will die :D

  20. As a favor to some of us who are not into this genre of music I’d add to tittle: “skip to 4:20 for awesome fretless playing.”

  21. Not my type of music but damn all these guys are bad ass. I couldn’t turn it off. Incredible musicians. The fretless definitely adds a different flavor. Keep it up guys.

  22. would be interesting to hear the bass isolated

  23. No one is trashing the vocals, they’re just saying it’s not their taste. Calm down

  24. I’m not into death metal but I love the musicianship of these guys – give me more!

  25. The people who are complaining about the vocals (It’s Death Metal, would you complain about rapping in Hip-hop?) remind me of the bassists who complain about any bassist who isn’t holding down roots on a P-bass.

Why do they have to slap? Why do they have more than 4 strings? Why are they using those effects? Why don’t they just buy a guitar?

For y’all who have enjoyed this, more excellent fretless metal playing can be heard by listening to Spires, Intronaut, Cynic, Exivious, any band with Steve DiGiorgio playing in it (Death, Sadus, Soen)

  26. There are some really shallow, close minded bass players out there i guess. Thats a shame! I wonder if there are painters/artists that hate blue or red, imagine how limited their work would be. Anywho….some folks here need to get out more.

  27. Quo Vadis is also good for a generic-tech-death-with-fretless-bass fix

  28. Great song off a great CD made by great musicians. Long live death metal!

  29. This is excellent death metal. The vocals are just another instrument. I don’t see how the timbre is that abrasive. Music is sound, he just makes a different sound than you are used to. Even if I didn’t like I, I still realize that and would never call it ‘stupid’ or ‘garbage’. Someone even claimed they were wasted talent. You cannot call yourself a musician or artist when you start saying such close minded things. It shows that you don’t understand the point of music at all.

  30. A metal bassist who not only knows what he’s doing well enough to merit being actually heard in the mix for once, but to play a 6-string fretless? More power to him! It’s nice to see a metal bassist doing more than hiding in the background and just doubling the riffs as best they can. Bad ass solo, he plays, too. The only thing I dislike is the gravity blasts in the middle, as they feel tacked on and gratuitous. I’d love to hear more from this guy!
