Milt Hinton: Old Man Time

I recently picked up Milt Hinton’s book Bass Line, and it just reinforced what a wonderful life he led. Known for his incredible slap technique, “The Judge” was also known for his great sense of humor, and here’s a great clip that shows off his personality and playing.

The recording comes from the 1992 Mid-America Jazz Festival in St. Louis, Missouri, where Hinton was joined by Derek Smith on piano and Bobby Rosengarden on drums.

    • I saw him at a clinic back in my college days…he tells the story of traveling all over the world with these famous players and get comes home from a tour and asks his wife what she thinks and she says “take out the trash”.

  6. I remember studying with Milt in the Hunter College Jazz Workshop in 1974-75! In that brief time, he inspired me so much. He was very encouraging in a time when bass guitar (Fender Bass) wasn’t accepted by a lot of the “old heads”. My memory of him, remains a blessing to me!
