Reader Spotlight: Carson Childers

Carson ChildersMeet bassist Carson Childers, who shares his story in this week’s reader spotlight feature.

It is always exciting to see the next generation of players taking inspiration from the long line of bass playing legends who came before them, and Carson is clearly well schooled in the old and new school – spanning plenty of genres too. Check out his influences, his story of “practicing anyway”, and our always favorite “super power” response.

Bio:

I’m an 18 year old bass player playing in Lexington, Kentucky. I’m currently studying at Asbury University on jazz band scholarships. On the weekends I play at various churches and bands around town.

Location:

Lexington/Kentucky/United States

Day gig:

Full time college student and busser at Saul Good Restaurant and Pub.

Years experience:

About six years.

Bands & Gigs:

Currently I am the permanent bassist of the John Hatfield Band (check us out on iTunes!). I regularly volunteer at Southland Christian Church while other churches and bands hire me out. I also play with the Sam Jones Band.

Gear:

  • Fender American Standard P Bass V
  • GK MB210
  • Sansamp Bass Driver DI
  • BBE OptoStomp
  • Polytune

Why I play the bass:

I started playing bass in middle school when the jazz band at my middle school in New Jersey needed a bass player. I saved up until I finally acquired some starter equipment. My family then immediately moved to Lexington, Kentucky before I ever got to play with the jazz band. I had the bass, so I practiced anyway.

My bass superpower/claim to fame

Playing in the pocket, always being mindful of the groove and how the song feels to the audience. Always.

My influences

I’ve always loved Pino Palladino’s work with D’Angelo, listening to him really took my bass player to the next level. Also I really love Jaco Pastorius, James Jamerson, Sean Hurley, Janek Gwizdala, Jamareo Artis, Esperanza Spalding, Tony Grey, Owen Biddle, and Ethan Farmer. It also really helps me to listen to drummers, so I listen to a lot of Questlove, Chris “Daddy” Dave, Jon Karel, and many others. I also have a ton of local people that have really influenced me the last few years like Mike Vandemark, Robbie Goins, Bob Bryant, and Jairaj Swann.

  1. Cool feature! How do you find these guys? I would love to try and get myself featured :)

  2. Carson, you are a great inspiration too me and two of my gransons. Jaylon (pictured) plays the Trumpet and his cousin Devon (both 12) plays the Sax. Met your Dad (Rick) and he told me of your story. He was very, very, proud! Rightly so! Good Luck……or better yet….good jamming.
