Billy Cox and The Band of Gypsys Experience Announce Tour Dates

Billy Cox will be paying tribute to Jimi Hendrix on a week-long tour of the northeastern U.S. in mid-June with his group The Band of Gypsys Experience. Cox, who anchored the original Band of Gyspys with Hendrix in the ’60s, will be performing the legendary guitarist’s classics including “Machine Gun” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” as well blues and roots tunes from his throughout his career.

The four-piece band will feature two guitarists – Dani Robinson and Byron Bordeaux – instead of the classic trio setting that the bassist is famous for performing in. Cox says that the band is a natural progression of Hendrix’s direction towards the end of his career.

“It was Jimi’s dream to use a second guitarist,” he explains. “He was getting into a new phase of his music and he felt that one guitar limited the band and limited the new music that he was creating. There were glimpses of what he was trying to do at Woodstock with Larry Lee as the second guitarist. But that idea was not able to continue. Now almost 43 years later, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to continue the dream with two dynamic guitarist, Dani Robinson and Byron Bordeaux.”

Cox is the sole surviving member of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gyspys and Jimi Hendrix Experience groups. He appeared with Hendrix at his infamous Woodstock performance and was featured on the album Band of Gypsys and several of the guitarist’s posthumous releases.
