JHS Pedals Now Shipping Colour Box Preamp Pedal

JHS Pedals Colour Box Preamp PedalTons of classic albums got their guitar and bass tones by simply plugging directly into vintage recording consoles, and one of the most popular consoles made by Neve is the inspiration for a new stompbox by JHS Pedals called The Colour Box. The pedal is a 100% analog studio-grade preamp that utilizes dual Neve 1073 preamp topologies and a Baxandall EQ to accurately create that vintage sound.

Designed for an array of instruments, the Colour Box has XLR and 1/4-inch inputs for basses, guitars, keyboards, microphones, and “anything else you can plug into it.” It also has independent XLR and 1/4-inch outputs that can be run to separate destinations.

Its components include a custom Lundahl transformer that the company says adds weight, heft, and a 3D quality like studio preamps. The Gain section has three parts: Pre-volume, Master Gain, and Step Gain. Pre-volume acts like a drive knob on an overdrive pedal, while the Master Gain knob acts like a typical volume control. The Step gain changes the gain of each preamp in five stages ranging from 18dB to 39dB.

JHS tuned the EQ section for less control interaction in favor of more boost and cut capability. The center frequencies are Treble 10kHz, Middle 1kHz, and Bass 120Hz, with /- 17dB of control. Finally, the Highpass filter can be switched on or off and spans from 60Hz to 800Hz with a 6dB per octave slope.

The JHS Colour Box runs on a 18-volt DC negative center power supply, which the company provides with purchase. It is shipping now with a street price of $399.
