New Exhaustive 27-Disc Set Details the 1973/74 King Crimson Live Experience
Everything one could possibly want from mid-1970s King Crimson has been compiled on the massive collection, Starless.
The exhaustive 27-disc set pretty much presents the material created by the 1973/74 version of King Crimson — particularly in its live shows — from almost every conceivable audio angle available on CD or DVD/Blu-Ray.
The multi-CD and DVD set, which will only have one pressing, includes 19 CDs of live music, with 7 of those drawn from multi-track tape from fall 1973 shows in Europe. 11 CDs use material from high-quality stereo reel-to-reel soundboard tapes. John Wetton played bass in this incarnation of the band.
Some of the music has appeared previously, on The Great Deceiver (1992), my mail order, and as downloads from DGM Live. Performances found on The Great Deceiver, however, have been remastered from the original mixes.
Some 1973 Amsterdam performances have also been released as The Night Watch (1997), however, this time around, the mix is different. And of course, there’s some never-before-released live music, too. This set puts all this work into one full package.
There’s also a CD of music from a Paris TV broadcast and the 2011 mix of the studio album that appeared after these shows — Starless and Bible Black. The album is also featured on a DVD with 5.1 surround sound, original and new mixes, and additional audio. Another DVD includes music from live shows in Europe and Pittsburgh, and a Blue-Ray disc includes lossless audio transfers of several live shows.
There’s an album-sized booklet with photos, memorabilia, and new sleeve notes, too.
The track list will blow your mind if you’re a fan of this era of King Crimson. Starless is out now in the deluxe, limited edition box set. Check out the total package:
