Sharay Reed: What’s Going On Bass Solo

We often feature solo bass tunes, but this one is a little different. Sharay Reed channels the spirit of James Jamerson by playing a solo bass line to the Marvin Gaye hit “What’s Going On” in this clip from the One Mic show.

Reed weaves his own bass line for the song while keeping the groove in the Motown vein. His note choices perfectly outline the harmonies so you can clearly hear each part of the song. Gaye’s vocals are mixed in throughout the song for a beautiful and haunting effect.

Nice bass playing by Sharay , plus this Fender bass is really fine , I’ve never seen this color on a Fender and the pick guard matches up well. I’m beginning to think I should have bought a 5 string bass.

    • Ha! You just bought a bass! Don’t second guess yourself listening to another person’s sound. Find your sound with your instrument!

Zup Doc, I agree with with Gregg. Just dig on what ya got, at least for a while. Play around, find the bass’s sweet spots, finger style, pick player, whatever. Make it a part of you… and you a part of it… and CONGRATS on the new bass purchase!

Thanks’ guys , you all are right, this new Fender Jazz bass is nice , I’ve enjoying playing it a lot over the past 3 months. I was so use to playing this old Ibanez but it looks like a toy sitting next to the new shiny Fender bass. Now its time to plug in and get some new blisters.

  2. Yeah, this sounds nice. Dude is in the zone forsure.

  4. This is good and all, but the more I hear solo bass, the more boring it gets.

Before the climax, I think he lost the groove a bit, but the rest was beautiful.

  8. Are there any Bass Players on this site? I’m going to buy a Bass! Something with four strings and one that plays low – like a bass. Talented players but not Bass Players.
