New Set Compiles Yearly Grateful Dead Live Performances

Even though bandleader Jerry Garcia passed away 20 years ago, The Grateful Dead, in the midst of celebrating its 50th anniversary, still has something special to give — part of its past.

The four CD set, 30 Trips Around the Sun: The Definitive Live Story, serves as an introduction to the legendary live performances from the band, featuring stalwart founding bassist Phil Lesh, whose inventive playing helped define the band’s sound.

Beginning with a re-released track, “Caution (Do Not Sleep on Tracks)” recorded as The Emergency Crew in 1965, the box set features unreleased tracks for each year of the full band’s existence through 1995. The four CD set is actually a condensed version of an 80-disc, $700, limited edition (6,500 copies) set featuring the full, unreleased shows from which each of the songs were pulled.
