Mark Michell's Advanced Rock BassMark Michell, bassist for the progressive band Scale the Summit, has created an instructional book, with a video component, called Advanced Rock Bass: for 4-, 5- and 6-String Basses.

“This is a complete guide to my approach when composing basslines. I focus on every single aspect imaginable: chord analysis, fretboard mapping, composing lines with harmonics and tapping, voicing chords, mixing different techniques together, and an entire chapter on my personal philosophy for the role of the bass in modern rock/metal music,” Michell writes on his website.

The set includes 75 minutes of video instruction, more than 70 exercises and 10 play-along tracks.

  1. I just got this book a few days ago and I’m a huge fan of it. The first 5 chapters of the book talk about some techniques and way to think about your role in a song. The last chapter has 10 backing tracks each with 3 different approaches and a bit of explanation on the thought process to it. It’s very thought provoking and will have me exploring the bass in ways that I haven’t thought of before.
