Les Claypool and Sean Lennon Team Up for Album, Tour

Sean Lennon and Les Claypool

Primus frontman and bass wizard Les Claypool has teamed up with Sean Lennon to form a new band called The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and they’re taking the show on the road. The duo has announced their album, Monolith of Phobos, will be released on June 3rd with a three month tour to follow.

Claypool and Lennon first got together during last year’s summer tour with Primus, Dinosaur Jr. and Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, which Lennon co-leads. After a backstage jam session on “Southbound Pachyderm,” Claypool invited Lennon to collaborate. “One thing I think folks will be surprised by is what a monster of a guitar player Sean is,” Claypool told Rolling Stone. “Not only does he have technical ability, but also the sounds that come out of his rig tend to be pretty bent and compelling. His DNA definitely shines through, though it isn’t just his father’s musical sensibilities that he reflects but also his mother’s abstract perspective, which to me, makes for a glorious freak stew.”

The Claypool Lennon Delirium has released two songs so far. Check out “Cricket and the Genie” and “Mr. Wright”:

The live band will include Beastie Boys’ Mark Ramos Nishita and Paul Baldi of the Fungi Band. Together they’ll kick off their U.S. trek in Orlando, Florida on June 4th before tackling the East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest before heading back east to finish up at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.

Experiencing a little delirium and fungi at the same time , twisted sister boys.

Eh… I hear lotsa wonky keyboard but minimal guitar on that – I was hoping they would showcase Lennons ‘monster guitar’ playing more. Perhaps I’m skeptical because Les’s side projects peaked with the Frog Brigade, IMHO.

I haven’t enjoyed any new music as much as I have this for a while now. I’ve appreciated a fair bit, but this is actually fun to listen to. These guys are clearly having a great time making this. I’d happily watch them do this live.
