Ben Harper: When The Levee Breaks

I’ve been listening to Ben Harper’s latest album, Call It What It Is, and loving it – especially with the return of the Innocent Criminals and Juan Nelson.

That got me digging around for more, which brought me to this excellent cover of “When The Levee Breaks”, performed live at Jazz à Vienne on July 5, 2013.

Harper’s Relentless7 bassist Jesse Ingalls is on the set, along with Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica.

The song of course was popularized by Led Zeppelin on their IV album, but it was actually written by husband and wife Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929.
