Bass of the Week: 39 Custom Guitars CK Canorous

Chris Kollias wrote in to share his new bass from 39 Custom Guitars, and it’s a beauty. The CK Canorous is a 5-string that the bassist wanted to cover a wide tonal palette.

“The main purpose of this instrument is to cover a wide variety of sounds according to the demanding needs,” Kollias said. “The neck is made of white wenge with bubinga stripes and wenge veneers. The neck profile is thick since I am used to playing Warwick basses over the years.”

Its body wings are mahogany while the toneblock is flamed maple and Pao Rosa, which is also used for the fingerboard. “The fretboard is a rosewood species called Pao Rosa and its density is between Indian rosewood and ebony,” he explains. “The nut is made of acrylic and we call it the lolipop nut due to its color.”

Kollias opted for a pair of Delano SBC 5 HE/S-4 quad coil pickups matched to a Darkglass Electronics Tone Capsule preamp. Controls include a volume knob with push/pull function to switch to passive mode, blend, bass, low mids, high mids, and switches to put the pickups into series, cross coil, and parallel modes.
