Unreleased Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius: “Young And Fine”, Live (1978)

Just in time for Jaco Pastorius’s birthday today, Rick Suchow has shared another great video.

This one, like others we’ve shared before, was recorded during Weather Report’s 1978 show in Reading, PA. The video was shot by Peter Erskine’s father, Dr. Fred Erskine and mixed with the audio feed from Brian Risner’s soundboard mix.

“The interesting thing about this particular tune is that it was originally slated for the live WR album 8:30, but when part of the master tape was accidentally erased in the studio, the band needed to make side 4 of the double album all-new studio material,” Rick shared. “Oddly enough, Peter Erskine did not include the song on last year’s Legendary Live Tapes release, so other than the band’s official live DVD from Germany, this never-before-heard version of Wayne Shorter’s classic tune is the only known performance with quality audio available. In my opinion, it’s one of the band’s greatest live performances, particularly Jaco’s killer bass.”
