Miki Santamaria: Solo Bass Arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed”

Miki Santamaria never ceases to amaze us, and it would seem he raises the bar with each new video. Here he is performing his solo bass arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed”, a song he calls one of his favorites. The bass is a Yamaha BB2024X, and he’s using reverb from Garage Band. Amazing.

Zander Zon: Kinetic

Zander Zon impresses as always with a performance of his tune, “Kinetic”, from his album, Saturn Return. As Zander explained in our Track by Track feature on the album, “The ideas behind this piece were energy, motion and dynamics, hence the title. I’m using [a] thumb percussive technique … as well as tapping and fingerstyle.” While we love the composition...

In 1992, the Pat Metheny Trio took the stage at the Brecon Jazz Festival, performing Milton Nascimento’s “Vera Cruz”, among other tunes. Bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes make the trio really cook. Check out Dave’s solo around the 1:00 mark. Oh yeah.

I love it when a top 10 list has another top 10 list in it. So much bass goodness. Errick Lewis and Michael Manring Jam

So this video was apparently the first time bassists Errick Lewis and Michael Manring performed together. And they just decided to improvise it all the way through. Sweet.

Adam Stevens: All Bass Cover of MAGIC!’s “Rude”

When Adam Stevens first heard the tune “Rude” by Reggae/pop group MAGIC!, he said he couldn’t get the song out of his head. A week later, he recorded this all bass cover of the tune. And that makes it just a little sweeter, to us at least.

New Steps Ahead: “Wishing Well”, with Richard Bona

What Richard Bona can do with a bass is pretty much supernatural. Here’s New Steps Ahead performing one of Mike Stern’s tunes, “Wishing Well,” which features Stern and Bona prominently before the rest of the band kicks in. That band also includes Mike Mainieri on vibes, Bill Evans on sax, and Steve Smith on drums. So so good.

Songwriter Simon Wood Harris has been busy working on a project with some awesome musicians and goals. Described as “the pursuit of dynamic energy, the hope of the edge of perfection and the promise of an insight into the minds of the great musicians,” SWH’s Unidentified Flying Project has put out their first video. “[I] started to consider the idea...
