Vincenzo Virgillito’s “Precondition”: A Groundbreaking Bass Journey Honoring Mingus and Jaco

Vincenzo Virgillito: Precondition

Italian jazz bassist Vincenzo Virgillito has put the bass in the spotlight on his new album, Precondition. The masterful musician utilized double bass, electric bass, and fretless basses as well as analog pedals to create the record’s varying soundscape. With the exception of one track, the entire album was recorded without any overdubs or looping.

Virgillito composed all but two tracks, one of which is the jazz standard “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” by bass icon Charles Mingus. Another homage to a legend is Virgillito’s “Word Drops (Jaco’s Midnight)”, which features beautiful tone and rich chordal playing for a pensive atmosphere.

Precondition is out now on Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more.
