André Cymone Resurrects the Minneapolis Sound on New Solo Album
As an architect of “The Minneapolis Sound,” André Cymone is funk. He’s proving it again on his new solo album, The Resurrection of Funk, which is deeply tied to the city’s ethos. Cymone describes it not as nostalgia, but as a response to the present moment.
“There is a direct line from the city’s history of unrest and organizing to the music that emerged from it. Community centers, neighborhood bands, and shared cultural spaces weren’t accidents; they were responses,” a press release explains. “Funk, in this context, becomes protest without bitterness, resistance without despair. It is joy as strategy. Dance as defiance. Release as fuel.”
Cymone came up with Prince and shaped the pop star’s earliest solo releases before The Purple One tapped him for his touring band. According to Morris Day in the book On Time: A Princely Life in Funk, Cymone’s bass lines became essential components of those songs. The spirit and energy of that sound are clear on The Resurrection of Funk, which features standout bass lines on just about every track.
The Resurrection of Funk is a true solo album, as Cymone wrote and performed it all by himself. That includes the narrator role of The Funk Forecaster, who guides listeners through the funk journey a la George Clinton or Bootsy Collins.
