WATCH: Keanu Reeves on Bass, His Influences, and Finding His Place in Dogstar
This is a different kind of Bass Video of the Day but it is one I think every bassist should watch.
I recently had the chance to sit down with Keanu Reeves while Dogstar was on the road for All In Now tour and we spent a lot of time talking about bass.
Keanu shared the story of his first bass, a $300 white Ibanez and how he eventually found his way to Fender P and PJ basses. We also got into his Gallien Krueger rig, his approach to playing with drummer Robert Mailhouse and how he thinks about his role in Dogstar.
One of my favorite parts of the conversation was hearing him talk about the music and bass players who shaped him. Kim Deal, Peter Hook, the Ramones, and The Cure all came up, along with his love of melodic bass playing.
What really struck me was his attitude toward the instrument. After all these years of playing, recording, and touring, Keanu still calls himself a beginner.
I loved this conversation, and I think you will too.
