Gary Lucas and Peter Willems Team Up for “Double Dare, Vol. 1”
Guitarist Gary Lucas and bassist Peter Willems have teamed up for a duo projected called Double Dare, and they’ve just released their first EP. Double Dare, Vol. 1 introduces us to their unique blend of genres while focusing on the bluesier side of things.
Each song has an exciting edge to it thanks to their unique chemistry that comes in part from their complementary styles. Lucas, known for his work with Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart, has a knowing grit to his voice while Willems’s singing has purer highs. Musically, they’re on the same page with arrangements that leave space without losing a sense of rhythm. Fans of Hot Tuna will surely enjoy this duo.
Check out their take on the Willie Dixon classic “Spoonful,” which Willems arranged after being inspired by Cecile McLorin Salvant’s version.
Willems tells us that Double Dare, Vol. 1 will be out in February with a whole other sound. “Where Vol. 1 is acoustic, live, and roots Americana, Vol. 2 is electric (just the guitar though, still double bass) in the studio,” he tells us. “And on this [next] one it’s really hard to pin just one style… [it has] blues, psychedelic, jazz, rock, but we do a Shubert as well!”
Double Dare, Vol. 1 is available now on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Spotify.
Double Dare, Vol. 1 Track List:
