Each year we take time to reflect on all things bass from the past 12 months. That includes remembering the incredibly talented bassists that left us. 2024 was a tough year with some of our biggest bass heroes playing their final notes.

Jazz and avant-garde bassist Barre Phillips, a trailblazer in bass improvisation and solo records, has passed away at 90.

Former Renaissance bassist Jon Camp has died of undisclosed causes. He was 75 years old.

We are deeply saddened to share the news that Grateful Dead bassist and founding member Phil Lesh has died of undisclosed causes. He was 84 years old. The news was shared on Lesh’s Instagram account.

Session legend Herbie Flowers, who played some of the world’s most recognizable bass lines, has died at the age of 86. The news was shared by his family, though a cause was not given.

Audio and music technology innovator Keith McMillen has passed away at the age of 67. The news was shared on his website.

It’s another sad day for the bass world. Former Spiritbox bassist Bill Crook has died of undisclosed causes. His friend and A Textbook Tragedy bandmate Kai Turmann shared the news.

We’re sad to share the news that luthier Harry Fleishman has died. The instrument designer and builder was reportedly battling cancer.

Tom Fowler, known best for his time with Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention, has died of undisclosed causes. He was 73 years old. The news was shared in part by fellow Zappa alum Arthur Barrow, who paid tribute to Fowler.

Sad news to report today as Train bassist and co-founder Charlie Colin has died. He was 58 years old. The band shared the news with a tribute to Colin on Instagram.

Another jazz bass giant has left us with the passing of Palle Danielsson. He is perhaps best known for his stint as a member of Keith Jarrett’s “European Quartet.”

New Orleans bass hero Nick Daniels III has died of complications from multiple myeloma. He was 68 years old.
