Steep Canyon Rangers Announce New Bassist

Barrett Smith

The Steep Canyon Rangers have announced a change in the ranks with the addition of bassist Barrett Smith, who will fill the shoes of Charles Humphrey III. Humphrey was the band’s original bassist, but they say Smith is already a great fit.

“Our new bass player is Barrett Smith,” Woody Platt stated. “He’s from Columbia, South Carolina, but we met him in Chapel Hill in college, at the same time we all met each other there.“ Graham Sharp added, “I met Barrett in 1997. He’s always been one of my best friends, a musician I’ve looked up to all these years.”

The band, who often performs with Steve Martin, will be releasing their new album Out In The Open on January 26th. The new record was recorded before the personnel change and will feature Humphrey on bass.

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast.
