The Bad Plus Releases “Complex Emotions”

The Bad Plus has returned with Complex Emotions, marking the band’s second effort with the new quartet lineup of bassist Reid Anderson, drummer Dave King, guitarist Ben Monder, and saxophonist Chris Speed. Anderson and King, the band’s co-founders and primary composers, say the band has solidified in its new form.
“With this new album and this new batch of music, we’re planting a flag to say that this version of the band has really come into its own,” Anderson explains. “A big part of what the sound of this band is is the willingness to explore complex emotions. That’s something that we’re not only comfortable with but that we’ve embraced from the beginning of the band.”
Although the original band format was a piano trio, the new album retains the sonic identity of the group’s history. Waves of sounds crash and flow together as each player explores their space.
