Larry Collins and Joe Maphis: Ramrod
“The Bass Whisperer” Ed Friedland shared some old school cool on his Facebook page that’s a piece of bass history. Joe Maphis was country guitarist known for his flashy style, but in this clip he’s on bass to support a young Larry Collins. Both players, as Friedland noted, perform some incredible music.
“The earliest shred bass? First, we have Larry Collins, protege of Joe Maphis totally ripping it up on his doubleneck – Kid could play! Kid could rock! But on bass here, is Joe Maphis – a legendary guitar player/artist/producer from the early days when country met rock, one of the greats. Joe takes a nasty chorus on the old Gibson EB. This is from 1959,” he writes.
