Al Green has returned with a new single covering the R.E.M. classic “Everybody Hurts” for Fat Possum Records. The soul legend poured his heart into the track with a full band and strings for a deep experience.

“Recording ‘Everybody Hurts,’ I could really feel the heaviness of the song, and I wanted to inject a little touch of hope and light into it,” he wrote on social media. “There’s always a presence of light that can break through those times of darkness.”

The track was recorded in Memphis and sees the Reverend reunited with members of his classic Hi Rhythm Section including Reverend Charles Hodges, Archie “Hubbie” Tuner, and bassist Leroy Hodges. Hodges played on a majority of Green’s hits: “Let’s Stay Together,” “Love and Happiness,” “For The Good Times,” and more. He’s also known for his work with Ann Peebles (“I Can’t Stand The Rain”), Melissa Etheridge, and Cat Power. (Check out Ryan Madora’s Bass Players to Know article for more!)
