Reader Spotlight: From CBGB’s to Gloom Metal – Jerry Sofran’s Relentless Bass Journey

Jerry Sofran

Meet Jerry Sofran. 42 years ago, a guitarist handed Jerry a bass and told him they were starting a band.

That set Jerry on a path of recording and touring with various metal bands.

Jerry is this week’s No Treble reader in the spotlight (you could be next). Here’s his story…

Bio:

I started playing in various metal bands during the early 1980’s, when metal was not appreciated nor wanted by live music fans. Was told to “give it up, metal’s dead” by the “cool” bands in my area. Undaunted, I’ve continually played in bands on the heavier side of things ever since. During my glory days I played in, among others, the heavy rock band For Christ Sakes. We toured both coasts, playing showcases in an effort to secure a recording contract. We played everywhere from the Sunset strip in Hollywood, to several shows at New York City’s infamous CBGB’s. I’m currently the bassist for gloom metal band Vanishing Kids.

Location:

Rockford Illinois USA

Years experience:

42 years

Why I play the bass:

In 1982 my guitarist handed me a bass and told me we’re starting a band.

Gear:

I play Fender Jazz and B.C Rich Mockingbird basses. Ampeg amps into custom fitted cabs using Eminence 10″ and Peavy Black Widow Low Rider 15″s.

My Influences:

If I had to pick an influential bassist, it would probably be Martin Ain (Celtic Frost). I’m influenced more by songs and sounds, interesting tones, and the sounds and space created by fellow band members.

My bass superpower/claim to fame:

My claim to fame is my bass tone. Low, deep bass, minus mids and highs. I’ve been told my bass tone is “quivered taints like puddin’ skin”.
