From Cosmic Country to Memphis Soul: Mustang McGee Steps Out with ‘Horseplay’

Mustang McGee Horseplay

Late last year, Will “Mustang” McGee released his debut EP, It’s Mustang Time. The bassist/vocalist, known for his work with Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, promised us a full-length follow-up, and now it’s here.

Horseplay was recorded at Royal Studios in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, and carries on the city’s tradition of blending rock, soul, country, and blues. McGee blends influences ranging from Al Green to Steely Dan to My Morning Jacket over twelve tracks.

“I’m thrilled that this record is finally out in the world. It’s a culmination of so many chapters of my life and the story is finally here,” he shared on Facebook. “I hope you enjoy this eclectic collection of songs which is glued together by my love of Memphis Soul music, my home. Thanks to everyone who made this happen, I simply couldn’t have done it without you.”

McGee brought on two special guests for the album with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram on “Where You Found Me” and Daniel Donato on “For a Long Time.” Listen to his soulful vocals and strutting groove on “For a Long Time”:

Horseplay is available now digitally through Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more.
