Mark Sandman’s Legacy Lives On: Morphine’s “Bootleg Detroit” Remaster Unveils Hidden Gems

Before his untimely death from a heart attack on stage in Italy in 1999, bassist Mark Sandman only authorized one live album for his band Morphine. Now, fans can hear that album once again.
Morphine has released a new remastered and expanded version of the concert, dubbed Bootleg Detroit, which fan Alan Schmit secretly recorded at St. Andrews Hall on March 7th, 1994. The remastered deluxe edition includes eight never-before-heard tracks. It also marks the first time the historic concert has been made available on streaming services.
Morphine’s unique instrumentation created a one-of-a-kind sound, especially for its era. Sandman primarily played a two-string bass, using a slide to imbue a bluesy flavor to all the songs. The trio was completed by saxophonist Dana Colley, who sometimes played two saxophones simultaneously, and drummer Billy Conway.
