Alberto Rigoni, Stuart Hamm & Michael Manring Release Bass-Driven Prog Album “Dystopia”

Dystopia Album Cover

The formidable bass trio of Alberto Rigoni, Stuart Hamm, and Michael Manring has teamed up for Dystopia, an ambitious prog-rock concept album. The bass-driven music fuses prog rock, metal, fusion, cinematic soundscapes, and experimental textures over nine tracks.

“The album explores the tension between collapse and rebirth — a sonic representation of a fragmented world moving toward regeneration. With its layered compositions, dynamic interplay, and cross-genre influences, Dystopia pushes the expressive possibilities of the bass guitar to new heights,” the album description states.

The bass maestros are joined by drummers David Menoudakis and Tim “Herb” Alexander, formerly of Primus. Each bassist brings a distinct sonic identity to the album. In the track “Genesis,” Rigoni’s rock-solid foundation anchors the arrangement while Hamm layers in fluid tapping passages and Manring delivers a lyrical fretless melody on top — a clear example of how three bass voices can coexist without stepping on each other.

Each artist also contributes a solo bass track. Manring’s “The Algorithm” showcases his siganture fretless explorations and sophisticated harmonies, adding yet another dimension to the project’s conceptual arc.

Dystopia is available now on CD, vinyl, and digitally through Bandcamp.
