New Orleans duo 95MP keeps it stripped to bass and drums in this Marigny Tapes session, featuring Peter Varnado on drums and Miles Hancock on bass. The setup is minimal, but the sound is anything but.
Hancock appears to be playing a some type of Thunderbird through a Gallien Krueger Head and Markbass cabinet. With a deep effects chain, he builds layered textures, heavy subs, massive overdrive and at times he is buildings loops. The set features three tunes, “Epiphany,” “Tables,” and “Thunderbird,” each pushing a slightly different angle of the duo’s sound. There is a strong jazz fusion foundation, but it leans aggressive and progressive, with a trip-hop vibe running underneath much of the performance.
With just two players, its hard to hide. 95MP uses that space to their advantage, creating a dense, forward-looking take on the bass and drums duo format that feels both raw and fully formed.
