An Interview with Rebecca Johnson

Even though she can cite all of her influences from the funk, soul, and R&B masters, Rebecca Johnson has a groove all of her own. We caught up with Johnson to talk about her playing, recording gigs, and finding the people you want to play with.

Rebecca Johnson Band: You Got The Love

Back in June, we shared a video by the Rebecca Johnson Band performing Steely Dan’s “Peg”. Here’s another from the same set. Rebecca says this is a favorite song in her setlist: “You Got The Love” from the Rufus & Chaka Khan album, “Rags to Rufus”.

Steely Dan’s “Peg” is one of my all-time favorite tunes, thanks to the incredible bass line by Chuck Rainey. Rebecca Johnson and her band performed the tune live back in January. As always, Rebecca knocks us out with both her playing and singing.

Rebecca Johnson sent me this video, and I was glad she did. Earlier this month, Rebecca took the stage with her band and laid down some serious funk on Rose Royce’s “Car Wash.” Dig that tone!

Rebecca Johnson Band: Bass and Drum Solo

No Treble reader favorite Rebecca Johnson and her band were digging into the Meters classic “Just Kissed My Baby” when the trio decided to give the drummer some. Johnson keeps a steady, supportive groove for Con Settineri before launching into her own impromptu bass solo. Dig it:

We’ve featured Rebecca Johnson before. In fact, we’ve featured her playing Jaco Pastorius’ “Come On Come Over” too. But this one is a newer version, with a new lineup – and a new bass. Long time No Treble readers will likely remember bassist Rebecca Johnson, who has wowed us all over the years with her videos. Rebecca sent me one of her latest with her band performing “Come On, Come Over”, written by Jaco Pastorius and Bob Herzog (with vocals by Sam & Dave on Jaco’s 1976 debut album). Not only does Rebecca lay...

Rebecca Johnson: QW Brewery Live Bass Solo

It has been about a year since we first featured bassist Rebecca Johnson and her awesome live bass video. Rebecca just sent over a new one, saying “You guys have really helped my band get a lot of fans from all over the world :)” I think Rebecca had more to do with that than us. Check this out, and...

Rebecca Johnson Band: Live Bass Solo

Here’s a new reader-submitted video, from bassist Rebecca Johnson. Rebecca is an Australian bass player and singer with her own band, a 3-piece funk/R&B band she says has “real musicians (no machines).” In this video, Rebecca lays down a nice, groovy bass solo. Gotta love the interplay between the bass and drums! Have a video to share? Send it to...
