Mr. DanZ: Butterfly
We first featured Mr. DanZ five years ago, with their great cover of “Proto Cosmos.” Here’s the band, featuring bassist Ben Shepherd, performing “Butterfly” by Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin. Ben adds something special to the tune with the use of a vocoder.
Lake Street Dive: Baby Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts
Lake Street Dive is back with another live performance of a tune from their new album, Free Yourself Up. Here’s “Baby Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts”, once again featuring the great bass lines by Bridget Kearney.
Evan Marien x Dana Hawkins: Cali
It is exciting to see the videos coming regularly from one of our favorite duos. Filmed during their masterclass at Musicmaker in May, here’s Evan Marien and Dana Hawkins playing “Cali.”
Marcus Miller: B’s River
Marcus Miller has a new album out, but today’s video features a tune from his last one, Afrodeezia. I was so intrigued by this 2015 performance at North Sea Jazz, thanks in large part to the instrumentation. Marcus describes the instrument – and the inspiration for the song – in the video description: “My wife, Brenda, traveled to Ndola, Zambia...
YYNOT: No One at the Bridge
YYNOT performed another concert in Melbourne, Florida last week. Here’s an excellent clip of them digging deep into Rush’s catalog. From 1975’s Caress Of Steel’s “Fountain Of Lamneth,” here’s their performance of “No One at the Bridge.” As always, Tim Starace nails the bass lines, and vocalist Rocky Kuner is absolutely amazing.
Jonah Nilsson with Richard Bona: Coffee Break
You’ll probably recognize Jonah Nilsson thanks to his work with Dirty Loops. Jonah released a new solo single a few days ago for his tune “Coffee Break,” and he had an exciting guest on the track: Richard Bona. “It’s my biggest pleasure to have such a great musician/artist and long time inspiration on this song!” Jonah shared. The track is...
Cameron Graves Trio: Satania Our Solar System
Here’s a killer clip of the Cameron Graves Trio featuring drummer Mike Mitchell and bassist Max Gerl throwing down on “Satania Our Solar System”. Recorded at the TivoliVredenburg in the Netherlands, the trio stretches the groove into outer space. Gerl dishes out some mean bass work to back up Graves before taking an extended and ear-bending solo himself.
Mohini Dey & Steve Vai: Live
Last year, Steve Vai’s band was one of the headlining acts at NH7 Shillong 2017, India’s largest multi-genre music festival. Vai brought on a special guest Mohini Dey during the show, who lived up to the spotlight in this performance. Vai’s intro says it all.
Bloodstone: Natural High, 1973
Now we’re going to slow things down a bit. I’ve been on a classic soul and R&B kick lately and this song has been on repeat. Bloodstone’s “Natural High” is one of the smoothest love ballads I’ve ever heard. Although the band appears to be playing along to their own recording in this video, Charles McCormick’s playing on the track...
Deltron 3030: Nobody Can
Deltron 3030’s touring behind their album Event 2 can only be described as epic. The hip-hop trio of Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, and DJ Kid Koala took a full band on the road. No hip-hop would be complete without a fat bass line, and Juan Alderete was on hand to dish it out. Here’s a great clip...
Xavier Foley: Irish Fantasy
Xavier Foley’s virtuosity on the double bass is evident as soon as he starts playing. His amazing composition skills are often on display as well. Here’s a spellbinding performance of his original piece “Irish Fantasy” that takes you on a tour of the Emerald Isle and the bass at the same time. Check out his bow hair by the end!
Kung Fu: Caught Up
Kung Fu is back with another track in their Ninja Cuts series. “Caught Up” is a track written by keyboardist Beau Sasser. “Caught Up is about your typical bad day,” he writes. “I was inspired by the movie ‘The Fifth Element,’ where the main character continually gets caught up in the drama of everyone he encounters…something we can all relate...
