Ben Harper: When The Levee Breaks
I’ve been listening to Ben Harper’s latest album, Call It What It Is, and loving it – especially with the return of the Innocent Criminals and Juan Nelson. That got me digging around for more, which brought me to this excellent cover of “When The Levee Breaks”, performed live at Jazz à Vienne on July 5, 2013. Harper’s Relentless7 bassist...
Louis de Mieulle: Nanobot
Louis de Mieulle, a French bassist/composer living in NYC, just released his second album, Stars, Plants & Bugs. He sent us his video of the track “Nanobot”, which was filmed live during his in studio session in Brooklyn. We dig it!
Jeff Healey with Marcus Miller: See The Light
Ian Pettersson has sent us a handful of great videos, and he just sent us another. “An old one, but I hadn’t seen it before,” Ian said. “Jeff Healey with Marcus Miller ripping it up. Awesome performance!” The band includes the late Jeff Healey on vocals and guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, Dr. John on piano and Omar Hakim on...
MarloweDK: “Shining Star” Bass Playalong
So great to see MarloweDK back posting videos. In this one, MarloweDK is playing along to the Earth, Wind & Fire track “Shining Star”, in preparation for a gig. He’s playing it on his all-stock ’77 Fender Jazz, which along with all the basses on the wall behind him, gives us some serious GAS.
Parliament-Funkadelic: Flashlight (Live)
A few days ago, Parliament-Funkadelic took the stage on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform their 1978 hit “Flashlight.” Alissia Benveniste laid down the groove on bass, while Bootsy Collins backed up the band on drums. Bootsy played drums on the original track, thanks to the fact that Bernie Worrell played the bass line on three connected Minimoog...
Adam Ben Ezra & Daniel Casares: Tumbada
We’ve shared a video of Adam Ben Ezra performing his tune “Tumbada” before. In this video, Adam performs the tune with Spanish/Flamenco guitarist Daniel Casares. The duo has been touring lately. Such a great tune, with a nice, new take.
Jaco Pastorius: Musicians Institute Master Class
A little over a year ago, Musicians Institute discovered a video in their vault of Jaco Pastorius’s appearance during a master class, which took place in the mid-80’s. They recently posted the entire video, where Jaco fielded questions from students. “Despite the glitchy video, the bassist’s signature sound rings loud [and] clear as he unveils the secrets of his virtuosity...
Gracie and John Patitucci: I’ve Just Seen A Face
I love bass and vocal duets, but this one is special. John Patitucci sat down with his daughter Gracie, who goes by Gra Music, for a gorgeous cover of the Beatles classic “I’ve Just Seen a Face.” Patitucci lays down the perfect groove and fills to flesh out the arrangement while allowing Gracie to sing it out. The musical connection...
Jesús Rico Pérez: Elegy
Solo bassist Jesús Rico Pérez is back with a brand new video. This one is different than ones we’ve heard from the past, but equally strong in the composition and performance.
Naty Hernández: Manos De Agua
We love the videos coming out of Berklee, in large part because of their diversity. Here’s bassist/vocalist Naty Hernández performing her original composition “Manos De Agua” in Studio A. Naty’s bio tells the story: “Her music represents the amalgamation of the rhythms from the Andean mountains in Colombian with jazz and sonorities of world music.” Enjoy.
Christian Sturgess: Brutai’s “Onyx” Bass Playthrough
Brutai’s Christian Sturgess just released a playthrough video for their song “Onyx,” and it’ll melt your face. The song, which appears on their 2013 self-titled EP, features a killer bass part with intricate rhythms using slap, strumming, and three-finger techniques. The bassist’s snarling bass tone is also something to marvel. Sturgess gave the low down in the YouTube comments section....
Tedeschi Trucks Band: Tiny Desk Concert
Tedeschi Trucks Band made a stop at NPR’s offices and packed the biggest band I think I’ve ever seen in for NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concert”. Anchored by bassist Tim Lefebvre, the band performs some tunes from their latest album, Let Me Get By. The set includes “Just As Strange”, “Don’t Know What It Is” and “Anyhow”.
