Mike Wheeler Band: That’s What Love Will Make You Do

Here’s a video that will get you moving in your seat. Bassist Larry Williams drives the bus in this clip of the Mike Wheeler Band performing “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.”

His enormous energy propels the group’s groove, but it’s his ferocious solo at the 4:18 mark that steals the show. After he builds from fingerstyle to slap, Wheeler asks Williams “What if James Brown came down here? What would you play?” Williams obliges by running through a few of the soul star’s grooves before getting back to the tune at hand.

    For more “Blues-played-by-left-handed-bass-players-with-upside-down-basses” goodness, check out Kerry Clark playing with “Larry McCray Band”.

  2. ok. i’m a lefty on bass and guitar, with lefty models. while i feel like an oddball sometimes, i just can’t figure out how guys like this can play a righty upside-down, strings and all, especially when they thump and slap. i’ve seen others like him play with the low e on the bottom, but this dude is killin’ it like crazy. man, oh man!!! go, larry go!

  3. Always amazed at players who can handle a right-handed bass left-handed – and an intelligent slap technique to boot!!

  7. Clifford Archer

    @Gage left handed Fender jazz

  8. I would cut off my right leg for 1/4 of the talent Larry Williams posses. I still wouldn’t be worthy. I almost fell over when he hit the slap bass groove. It was like a religious experience. I cried a bit. In other words, amazing.

    Whoa! They’re all slamming! Rocking the Blues!

  10. Skip Taylor

    I’m a lefty who learned to play right handed (Dad wouldn’t let me flip the bass upside down.) I’m always amazed seeing bassists play flipped. And this dude kills it.

  14. wouldn’t want to be the band following that band.

    AWESOME!!!!! GROOVING HARD!!!!!!

    A power trio that leaves most full-size bands in the dust. A guitarist that sings, plays rhythm and solos with his soul on fire; a drummer who locks a groove down like hard time at Sing Sing; Larry Williams, who plays so well, he may as well have this band named after him.

    Larry deserves a big ol’ contract with Rolex. I thought his watch was going to shatter during his slap solo – amazingly awesome!
