Esperanza Spalding Announces New Project, Tour Dates

Esperanza Spalding "Emily’s D+Evolution" Tour

After wrapping up her successful Radio Music Society tour cycle, Esperanza Spalding has announced she’ll be hitting the road this Spring and Summer in support of a new project. Emily’s D+Evolution is described as rekindling the bassist’s childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement to expand her performances.

“Emily is my middle name, and I’m using this fresh persona as my inner navigator,” Spalding explains. “This project is about going back and reclaiming un-cultivated curiosity, and using it as a compass to move forward and expand. My hope for this group is to create a world around each song, there are a lot of juicy themes and stories in the music. We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies.”

Spalding will kick off the tour on May 5th at The Independent in San Francsico, California before crossing the entire U.S over May, June, and July. The final performance in the tour is currently set for July 4th at Essence Fest in New Orleans, Louisiana. For a taste of what’s to come, Spalding released this teaser trailer for the tour:

  1. hmmm – too artsy for me. i dig her playing and singing but don’t know about this…

  2. What? No Portland performance?

  3. Steve Carriere

We have tickets for the Fargo show. It’s a small theatre so it’ll be a pretty “intimate” setting. It’ll be interesting I guess. Not gonna lie, I hope we hear some standards but if not, she has a great voice and is a great player so I hope that will shine through all the “show” that may be happening.

Can’t be too hard on her for trying something new.
