Reader Spotlight: Mia Webster

Mia Webster

Meet Mia Webster, a bassist who has as much personality coming through as any I’ve seen in the Reader Spotlight series.

Mia also has the right attitude when it comes to bass and music. Here’s her story.

Bio:

I’m Mia, I’m 25 and I live in Norwich, UK. I’ve been playing bass for a few years now and am insanely passionate about music. I love everything from rock to hip-hop, and country to industrial. I know this is primarily a bass related website, so people generally want to read stuff about bass. But the most important thing to me is songwriting. Anything I play is purely to serve the song and that’s one of my favourite things about bass. It’s not a lead instrument, so that means whatever I choose to play is what I think makes the song the best it can be! I’m not really worrying about how many notes I can fit in or how many cool licks I can show off with… I just wanna write and play songs.

Location:

Norwich/UK

Day gig:

Currently have a boring day job in retail :( selling weird clothes to weirder people. Gotta pay the bills right?

Years experience:

7 years

Bands & Gigs:

I play in a band called Wicked Faith. We’ve been together a few years now and we’re just finishing recording the follow up to our first self released album “Under No Illusion” (which is available to listen to in its entirety on YouTube!) Our new stuff will be out very soon! We’re all massive music fans and we write the music we want to, which means there’s a bit of everything in there! :)

Gear:

  • Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV
  • TC Electronic BH550 head
  • TC Electronic RS410 cab

Why I play the bass:

Here goes… I’m the kinda person who starts studying a music diploma without being able to play an instrument. I always knew that music was the only thing I wanted to do, I just wasn’t sure how I was actually going to pursue it. So, after trying pretty much everything else, the second I put on a bass it all made sense.

My bass superpower/claim to fame:

Hopefully my band will be my claim to fame! But I also got to play a song with the amazing Bowling For Soup! They’ve been one of my favorite bands for about 10 years so it was a pretty big deal! They were super nice and have stayed in touch ever since which is really cool.

My influences:

Once again, I apologize if you’re looking for a list of bass players here!

The greatest songwriter in the world (to me) is Butch Walker. If you haven’t heard this guy, you should! I also love:

  • Bowling For Soup
  • Faith No More
  • Shovels & Rope
  • Fiona Apple
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Jurassic 5
  • Ryan Adams
