“If You Have to Ask”: Stuart Clayton Covers Flea’s Funky Groove on Bass

Stuart Clayton highlights Flea’s move toward laid-back fingerstyle funk with his cover of “If You Have to Ask,” from Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

“[This track] showcases Flea’s transition to more laid-back fingerstyle funk grooves, moving away from his signature aggressive slap bass lines,” Stuart shared. “The bass line for this song was performed on a 4-string bass with each string detuned a whole step (D-G-C-F). Tuning in this way makes the verse bass line a little easier to play, although it is also playable in standard tuning, with a detuned E-string.”
