Watch: Bassist Pops Magellan and Sput Team Up for a Soul-Soaked Jazz-Fusion Session
Bassist Pops Magellan leads a masterful live session with Robert “Sput” Searight on drums for her track “Misunderstood”, filmed at the legendary EastWest Studios in Los Angeles. The performance blends psychedelic soul and jazz fusion, grounded by Pops’ melodic phrasing and deep groove. Her Brazilian roots subtly inform the rhythm and feel, adding warmth and motion beneath the surface.
She plays a Fender Mustang Bass, known for its short scale and punchy voice. But it’s the visual flair that grabs you. Her mismatched pickups, one cream and one black, look like alien tech fused into a vintage machine. It’s the kind of detail that perfectly matches her genre-warping style and off-world pocket.
Joined by Taylor Graves on keys, Curtis Crump on additional keys, Artur Menezes on guitar, and Laila Annelle on vocals, the video kicks off a three-part series, with more sessions arriving August 7 and 14.
