Nathan East and Friends Bring the Funk on The Meters’ “Cissy Strut”
We’ve shared a performance from this ArtistWorks session before and here’s another one that’s too good to pass up.
Nathan East is playing his signature Yamaha bass, joins Guthrie Trapp and Keith Wyatt on guitars and Daison Claiborne on drums for a take on The Meters’ classic, “Cissy Strut.”
Originally released in 1969 on The Meters’ debut album, “Cissy Strut” became one of the defining songs of New Orleans funk. Guitarist Leo Nocentelli came up with the tune as an opening number for the band’s live shows. With George Porter Jr. on bass and Zigaboo Modeliste on drums, it became an instant classic, reaching No. 4 on the R&B chart.
More than 50 years later, that groove still sounds as good as ever. And hearing Nathan and this crew put their own spin on it is a treat.
