Sam Grisman Project Releases Long-Awaited Debut Rooted in Bluegrass and the Grateful Dead

After years of touring, the Sam Grisman Project has released its self-titled debut studio album. Grisman, who is the son of mandolin legend David Grisman, started the band to shed light on the music and musicians he grew up around: Doc Watson, Jerry Garcia, John Hartford, Mike Seeger, Tony Rice, and more.

As such, Grisman took his bandmates to the Tractor Shed studio in January to record their take on bluegrass standards, Bob Dylan hits, Grateful Dead classics, and other beloved folk tunes.

“I’m extremely excited to finally share the first full-length SGP record with the world,” Grisman wrote on Facebook. “It is a sonic snapshot of some of my favorite music and musicians from a particular moment in time this January. I couldn’t be more proud of my friends for playing their hearts out on these songs we love so much, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to share this music with the community of music appreciators we are so lucky to be a part of.”

Grisman’s warm tone on the upright bass glues the album together. His sensitive approach always supports the music’s lead, be it vocals or instrumental solos. Check out this great take of “Buckets of Rain,” which includes a tasty bass solo.

Sam Grisman Project is available now on streaming services like Apple Music and Amazon Music. You can support Grisman directly by ordering it on CD through his father’s Acoustic Disc label.
