Julian Lage’s “Love Hurts” Session Keeps Moving Because Jorge Roeder Won’t Back Off

Julian Lage has been showing up everywhere lately, and for good reason. His trio with Jorge Roeder and Dave King is one of the most compelling small groups in jazz right now. This recently released session pulls from material on “Love Hurts” and captures the trio at their peak. It was recorded in 2019 but just surfaced on Julians youtube channel and it feels as fresh as anything coming out today.

Six songs in about 25 minutes.  Roeder is on upright the entire time, running through an Aguilar Tone Hammer into an Aguilar DB series cabinet. The tone stays warm and focused even as things start to open up.  He goes all in with heavy hands, deep pull, and a sound that cuts straight through everything.

Killer jazz, plain and simple.
