Tony Grey and Bob James Bridge Generations on New Album, “Nostalgia”
Tony Grey has teamed up with legendary pianist Bob James for a new collaboration called Nostalgia. The album features nine compositions spanning jazz, world music, and electronica as the duo balance tradition and innovation.
Beyond the genre span, the album connects two generations of jazz musicians. James was first discovered by Quincy Jones in 1962 and became a seminal voice on the CTI label, a co-founder of the band Fourplay, and composer of “Angela,” the theme from the TV series Taxi. Grey is a world-renowned bassist whose credits include work with John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Hiromi, and more.
“The story of Nostalgia began when Tony traveled to Bob’s home studio, where the two sat together and began writing and recording without agenda or expectation,” a press release explains. “It was there, in that unhurried and personal space, that they discovered their own musical language — a conversation between bass and piano that felt as natural as it was unexpected. The result is an album that carries the warmth of that connection in every note.”
Grey performs the bass as well as keyboards, vocals, and programming throughout Nostalgia. He and James are joined by flutist Naveen Kumar (A.R. Rahman), Kanjira player V. Selvaganesh (Shakti), Tabla player Karsh Kale, drummer James Johnson III (Ahmad Jamal), percussionist Joel Polacci, drummer Stu Haikney, and oud player Brandon Terzic.
