The Tragically Hip Revisit Their Final Tour With New Live Album
Ten years after they took the stage for the last time, The Tragically Hip have released a live album to honor their final run of shows. Live July 22 – August 20, 2016 also compiles the best of singer Gord Downie’s final performances, as he succumbed to brain cancer in 2017. Downie’s loss effectively put an end to the band’s plans, but bassist Gord Sinclair says the group hasn’t ruled future performances out.
“I would never say never,” Sinclair told Alex Nino Gheciu of The Canadian Press. “But it was profoundly sad to lose Gord. I think it would be profoundly sad to go on the road without him and his voice.”
The new live album keeps the spirit of the Hip alive. Nearly every show from the final tour was recorded, and longtime music executive Bruce Dickinson pulled the strongest performances. Listening back, Sinclair marvels at how they don’t sound like a farewell.
“You wouldn’t know that Gord was sick,” he says. “It was just another tour that just unfortunately happened to be our last.”
Sinclair’s bass lines kick off the 29-track album as he sets up the groove for “At Transformation” with a snarling tone and biting attitude.
