Adam Clayton and U2 Debut “Silencio” Live at the School Where the Band Formed
U2 celebrated a major milestone by going back to where it all started. The band returned to Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin on September 25th for a special performance marking 50 years since Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. first came together.
On September 25th, 1976, the musicians who would eventually become U2 gathered at Mullen’s family home after he posted a flyer at Mount Temple looking for some musicians to jam with. Fifty years later, they performed a seven song set in the school courtyard for roughly 1,000 students and staff.
One of the highlights was the first live performance of their new song, “Silencio.”
Clayton’s gear caught my eye immediately. He is playing a red Fender Precision Bass with a matching headstock that certainly looks like it could be a signature or custom instrument, there is a signature on the headstock but I just cant make it out. Fender has produced signature Precision Basses for Clayton in the past but I have can not identify this particular red version. He is also playing through an Ampeg combo in a color I do not remember seeing before. If anyone can identify either one, let us know in the comments.
“Silencio” was released one day before the performance along with the announcement of U2’s next album, Carnaval De Luz. The record arrives November 13th and will be the band’s 16th studio album and their first album of new material in nine years.
