Ulrich BassDesign Introduces Retro 57 Bass

Ulrich BassDesign has unveiled a new line of basses called the Retro 57 Series. Handcrafted in their workshop in Germany, the basses are inspired by the instruments, cars, and lifestyle of the 1950s. The bass comes with several options of pickups (P-style, J-style, MM-style, or a combination) fitted into its lightweight spruce and maple body, which is shaped thin for lightweight and ergonomics.

“Our Retro57 series combines a superior old school look with the needs of the modern bassist,” Ulrich writes. “Selected materials, pickup combinations, and parts are used, that have proven their worth on countless instruments over the years. We adopted all these great features to our design, improved the ergonomics, the sound and the playability in collaboration with musicians.”

The Retro 57 has several other unique features. Its slotted headstock is inspired by classical guitar making while the magnetic electronics control plate is covered with herringbone tweed. The body is a sandwich of maple and spruce that is kept thin for weight. All in all, the bass weighs just under six pounds.

“To prevent back pain and shoulder problems after hours of playing we are shaping especially thin bodies,” they explain. “So despite the solid body, the Retro57 is lighter than most other bass guitars on the market. In combination with our construction system, this leads to a faster attack and a precise sound. To keep the bass in optimal playing position the upper strap button is placed at the same level as the 11th fret, ready for you to rock.”

The Ulrich BassDesign Retro 57 is available for order for €2815 (approximately $3,367 US) excluding German VAT. That price includes the case, strap, and certificate of authenticity.
